I've had this footage for awhile. I got Final cut express and I am still over my head a little, but more videos to come!!
This is unedited for the most part, just me straight through with a couple silly transitions.
More to come my friends.
Enjoy

Re: Rainbow Michael
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 12:17 PMOddly enough most of the inspiration came from you and the AlienJon
One of my favorite feelings is butterfly extensions alternating the poi head and then the hands through the vertical center line around 2:11 and then trying to get a 6:1 poly rhythm Flower, I feel Like a warp speed warrior when I do that.
Thanks for rockin' your poi bro
What do you think of those staffs I sent yall'?

Re: Rainbow Michael
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 5:02 PMToo many nuances to comment all of it but here are a few things that jumped out at me:
1) the antispin vs longarm unwind to stall (!) and vert stall vs spinning stuff from 0:30 -0:40.
2) whip pull thingy at 2:16: I've been starting to work a bit with this in a long arm over the head. Also the reciprocal, where you are following a stall and then letting it swing instead of pulling it back. Olive was using both of these I think to accent weaves and such!
3) the little flip up, stall down thing at 2:42: I love interesting little transitions like that and I think they get overlooked a bunch... it's all transitions...
4) the butterfly polyrhythm that is smooshed to a vertical linear extension starting at 3:11~ish. I think the timing can be cleaned up... and taken in several possible directions, in the beat ratio sense! These are the types of things that I like to play with where the faster hand (not the ellipse) can have timing adjustments of maybe a quarter rotation either faster or slower to get striking variations on the theme!
5) circling the hanging poi (aka Gilligan) around the spinning one at 4:18: Greg Maldonado has been playing with the reciprocal of this in this Vulcan tech lounge vid at around 3:45.
Also check out Greg's stall to stall transition at 3:35! I think this can fit in nicely with points 3 and 5. =)
Where were you for Fire Drums?? ;-(

Sat, May 17, 2008 - 9:35 PMHey Jon
Thanks for your input
I look forward to hanging out and talking code, you have helped me along the path of Poi manipulation.
Im really diggin on butterfly extentions and variations of poly rythhm for the most part their is a lot of 2:1 , 3:1 , 4:1 and so on, but what about 2:3 and ratios like that. I love pendulum as well
I guess that this is official inspiration to start making more vids, I got some stuff in the attic of my mind that needs to be expressed.
Since you and Zan are the only ones to comment, I consider that a good thing. I'm really likin what yall are throwing down and I consider this my time to contribute. More vids to come!!!!
Thanks!!
I was bummed to miss firedrums, I had a show with the circus kids and could not miss their big show.
Intuitively I've been working on a lot of new stuff and one of these days I will be ready to start crackin' codes with you or at least catch up!
Much love
Rainbow

Re: Rainbow Michael
Sun, May 18, 2008 - 8:13 AMhello Rainbow Michael, thanks for the vid. i haven't seen you on here in awhile, but i remember you from a double staff video you did a while back that was among my earliest inspirations. while i may not speak tech as fluently as my friends..hehe.. i do notice other things. what impresses me in the movements of ALL advanced spinners is not just what the poi are doing, but the connection of the entire body's movement to the patterns made by the poi. right from the start, rocking back and forth from leg to leg, rooting to the ground, moving through tthe hips....i think more should be said about the role of the legs, the hips, the center of the body in relation to the circles made by the arms...you illustrate this very well in your spinning, as do Alien Jon and Zan, and without exception, the rest of the best spinners i have seen, each with their own unique style and expression, but undoubtedly manifest in this whole body connection. food for thought...
